The state is bordered by Rajasthan to the west, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Delhi to the northwest, Uttarakhand and Nepal to the north, Bihar to the east, Madhya Pradesh to the south, and touches the states of Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh to the southeast. It covers 243,290 square kilometres (93,933 sq mi), equal to 7.33% of the total area of India, and is the fourth largest Indian state by area. Hindi is the official and most widely spoken language in its 75 districts along with English. Uttar Pradesh is the third largest Indian state by economy, with a GDP of 9,763 billion (US$150 billion) and the fourth-largest contributor to India’s net domestic product. Agriculture and service industries are the largest parts of the state’s economy. The service sector comprises travel and tourism, hotel industry, real estate, insurance and financial consultancies.

इतिहास:-

उत्तर प्रदेश का ज्ञात इतिहास लगभग 4000 वर्ष पुराना है, जब आर्यों ने अपना पहला कदम इस जगह पर रखा। इस समय वैदिक सभ्यता का प्रारम्भ हुआ और उत्तर प्रदेश में इसका जन्म हुआ। आर्यों का फ़ैलाव सिन्धु नदी और सतलुज के मैदानी भागों से यमुना और गंगा के मैदानी क्षेत्र की ओर हुआ। आर्यों ने दोब (दो-आब, यमुना और गंगा का मैदानी भाग) और घाघरा नदी क्षेत्र को अपना घर बनाया। इन्हीं आर्यों के नाम पर भारत देश का नाम आर्यावर्त या भारतवर्ष(भारत आर्यों के एक प्रमुख राजा थे) पड़ा। समय के साथ आर्य भारत के दूरस्थ भागों में फ़ैल गये। संसार के प्राचीनतम शहरों में एक माना जाने वाला वाराणसीशहर यहीं पर स्थित है। वाराणसी के पास स्थित सारनाथ का चौखन्डी स्तूप भगवान बुद्ध के प्रथम प्रवचन की याद दिलाता है। समय के साथ यह क्षेत्र छोटे-छोटे राज्यों में बँट गया या फिर बड़े साम्राज्यों, गुप्ता, मोर्या और कुषाण का हिस्सा बन गया। ७वीं शताब्दी में कन्नौज गुप्ता साम्राज्य का प्रमुख केन्द्र था।

सांस्कृतिक जीवन:-

उत्तर प्रदेश हिन्दुओं की प्राचीन सभ्यता का उदगम स्थल है। वैदिक साहित्य मन्त्र, ब्राह्मण, श्रौतसूत्र, गृह्यसूत्र, मनुस्मृति आदि धर्मशास्त्रौं, आदि महाकाव्य-वाल्मीकिरामायण, और महाभारत (जिसमें श्रीमद् भगवद्गीता शामिल है) अष्टादश पुराणौंके उल्लेखनीय हिस्सों का मूल यहाँ के कई आश्रमों में जीवन्त है। बौद्ध-हिन्दू काल (लगभग 600 ई. पू.-1200 ई.) के ग्रन्थों व वास्तुशिल्प ने भारतीय सांस्कृतिक विरासत में बड़ा योगदान दिया है। 1947 के बाद से भारत सरकार का चिह्न मौर्य सम्राट अशोक के द्वारा बनवाए गए चार सिंह युक्त स्तम्भ (वाराणसी के निकट सारनाथ में स्थित) पर आधारित है। वास्तुशिल्प, चित्रकारी, संगीत, नृत्यकला और दो भाषाएँ (हिन्दी व उर्दू) मुग़ल काल के दौरान यहाँ पर फली-फूली। इस काल के चित्रों में सामान्यतः धार्मिक व ऐतिहासिक ग्रन्थों का चित्रण है। यद्यपि साहित्य व संगीत का उल्लेख प्राचीन संस्कृत ग्रन्थों में किया गया है और माना जाता है कि गुप्त काल (लगभग 320-540) में संगीत समृद्ध हुआ। संगीत परम्परा का अधिकांश हिस्सा इस काल के दौरान उत्तर प्रदेश में विकसित हुआ। तानसेन व बैजू बावरा जैसे संगीतज्ञ मुग़ल शहंशाह अकबर के दरबार में थे, जो राज्य व समूचे देश में आज भी विख्यात हैं। भारतीय संगीत के दो सर्वाधिक प्रसिद्ध वाद्य सितार (वीणा परिवार का तंतु वाद्य) और तबले का विकास इसी काल के दौरान इस क्षेत्र में हुआ। 18वीं शताब्दी में उत्तर प्रदेश में वृन्दावन व मथुरा के मन्दिरों में भक्तिपूर्ण नृत्य के तौर पर विकसित शास्त्रीय नृत्य शैली कथक उत्तरी भारत की शास्त्रीय नृत्य शैलियों में सर्वाधिक प्रसिद्ध है। इसके अलावा ग्रामीण क्षेत्रों के स्थानीय गीत व नृत्य भी हैं। सबसे प्रसिद्ध लोकगीत मौसमों पर आधारित हैं।
